When you live in London, there is a constant, simmering urge to exercise your ability to go to Europe. Like, you can just go on the Eurostar or British Airways apps and do it.
I was recently thinking about Cate Blanchett (as girls do) and Adam Driver (ditto), and remembered that they are in an upcoming movie together called Father Mother Sister Brother that will likely hit the festival circuit. In fact, it is premiering at Cannes. I have free will and proximity to just go if I wanted…
Walk with me here- this made me think, what if celebrities at Cannes played Moviegrid the way they share their Letterboxd top 4 on red carpets? What celebrities would be fun to watch play Moviegrid and maybe already do play? Let me speculate based on celebrities’ vibes.
Jesse Eisenberg
Jesse seems really nice and knowledgeable about movies. I enjoyed all the press he did for A Real Pain. I think he’d be a great sport at playing Moviegrid and probably teach everyone some important deep cut answers to file away.
Great Jesse movies to use in the game:
The Village- I always forget he’s in this, early Jesse days
The Education of Charlie Banks- obsessed with using this, will never watch it, directed by Fred Durst for some inexplicable reason
Ayo Edebiri
Ayo is always delightful on the red carpet. She’d understand running drills of Julia Roberts’ filmography, as I sometimes do. She’d also get excited when Paul Giamatti popped up in a terrible Meryl Streep/Liam Neeson movie from the 90s, cause she’d appreciate a valuable deep cut.
Ayo movies to use (her filmography is still growing):
Theater Camp- she has a small, but impactful role
After the Hunt- she’s in the upcoming Luca Guadagnino movie. This is only a good answer until it’s release. Then you need to retire it. Everyone will be using it.
Timothée Chalamet
He said he wants to be best. Part of being the best is keeping informed about your industry and studying the work of those before you. He’s up for nearly anything as demonstrated by his A Complete Unknown Oscar campaigning. Get the grid in front of Timmy.
Tried and true Timmy movies to achieve top 1%:
Love the Coopers- incredible Moviegrid cast here: Diane Keaton, John Goodman, Amanda Seyfried, Alan Arkin, Steve Martin, Olivia Wilde, Marisa Tomei, Anthony Mackie. Bonus: Molly Gordon, Ed Helms, June Squibb, Jake Lacy, Alex Bornstein. I don’t plan on ever actually seeing this movie.
A Rainy Day in New York- this movie sucks and has maybe the worst lighting I’ve ever seen in a film, but lives rent free in my head due to a stacked cast: Elle Fanning, Selena Gomez, Jude Law, Liev Schreiber, Rebecca Hall. Bonus: Suki Waterhouse, Annaleigh Ashford, Cherry Jones, Diego Luna.
Sophie Thatcher
I’ve heard Sophie refer to herself as a cinefile in several interviews now and I respect that. She was fantastic in Heretic, as was the whole cast, and I look forward to seeing her onscreen more. Sophie, I recommend you get on the Moviegrid train and keep building your movie knowledge.
There are no Sophie deep cuts yet. She’ll get there!
Francesca Scorsese
I think Francesca is really key here. She has immense influence over her dad- how much fun would it be to watch her coach Marty through a grid on Tiktok?! She’s great, her dad is great. I need her help to start this trend.
Great Scorsese movies to play:
The Big Shave- his first short, I believe
The King of Comedy- I won’t rest until this is so popular, it’s no longer a good answer
The Last Temptation of Christ- also important for Willem Dafoe, Harvey Keitel, Harry Dean Stanton, and David Bowie
In conclusion, Moviegrid team, email me to work together on marketing (I am so serious about this).
Moviegrid meetup at Cannes. Who’s interested?
