Actor of the day: Florence Pugh

I want an impenetrable Flo game

When Florence makes regular appearances on Moviegrid, I am great at conjuring her deep cuts. But when it’s been a minute, as it was when she appeared last week, I get a little rusty. I want to be locked in. I want those sub-3% answers for her.

As we go through Florence’s filmography that generates the best results on Moviegrid, this will be a Marvel and Dune free space. If you’re in a pinch and have to use one, I get it. But I want to prepare you to forget that those are even options.

The Extended Shrek Universe

I wasn’t really aware of the extent of Shrek spin-offs, beyond the Broadway musical which I had to put my foot down and skip seeing despite both Sutton Foster and Jeanine Tesori’s involvement. There are a lot of sequels, Puss in Boots movies, and shorts within the Shrek world.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)

In this sequel to Puss in Boots (2011), Florence plays Goldilocks, part of the Goldilocks and the Three Bears crime family.

Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish) (2020)

This is truly a secret weapon and not even a real movie, but my generosity in sharing it with you astounds me. It’s that good of an answer.

It is a 26 minute benefit reunion of the Father of the Bride (1992) cast. I think you can watch it on Netflix… Florence plays the daughter that Steve Martin and Diane Keaton have at the end of the sequel. Doing the research now, I am just learning of TWO more heavy hitters who are in this.

The Extended Shakespeare Universe

King Lear (2018)

King Lear is King Lear, you get the basics. This BBC adaption is set in 21st century London. Anthony Hopkins plays Lear to Flo’s Cordelia.

Lady Macbeth (2016)

Okay so this isn’t actually a Shakespeare adaption. It’s a British period piece based on an 1865 novella called Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. Florence plays a bored housewife married to an older man. A lot of themes about women’s subordinate position in the 1800s and adultery.

There’s more Florence to go through at another time- The Falling (2015), A Good Person (2023), etc. These titles will instantly uplift your Florence game. I don’t want to see anyone using Oppenheimer (2023) or Midsommar (2019). We love them as re-watches, not Moviegrid material.
